CHAPTER FIVE

Carolinn

I walked downstairs, pulling my hair up into a messy bun as I did so. Sometime after I had finally tapped out last night, too tired to go any further, Cole had hurriedly bathed me and washed my hair, the freezing cold water spurring us both to get out of the shower quicker.

I knew it was well past one o’clock in the afternoon by the time I finally rolled out of bed today, but I had been exhausted, especially since Cole and I hadn’t fallen into bed until almost four o’clock this morning.

“Afternoon, baby.” Cole greeted as he stepped out of the kitchen, almost as if he had a sixth sense for when I was near. “I was coming to get you up.” He told me as he moved towards me, a steaming cup of coffee in his hands. He handed it to me before he leaned forward to softly kiss me. God, bless his heart for already having coffee for me. “You okay?” He asked as he ran his eyes over me.

He knew as well as I did that I had pushed my body to its limits last night, but I was so desperate to be with him like that again that I hadn’t cared. I was sore, but that was expected.

I nodded, smiling up at him as a blush tinted my cheeks. He kissed me again before he ran his hands down my sides until he was lightly gripping my hips. “Don’t worry about snide remarks about last night.” He assured me. My shoulders relaxed. “I told everyone to just mind their own business.” I smiled up at him. Fuck, he was so perfect. “Besides, we’ve been apart for months.” He reminded me. “They understand.” He flashed me a wicked grin. “Your dad said he finally listened to that music album last night that he’s been wanting to hear.” Cole lightly teased.

“Oh, my God.” I groaned, my cheeks heating in embarrassment.

He laughed before he pressed a quick kiss to the tip of my nose and led me into the living room. Since Cole and I had been upstairs in the shower for the majority of the night, the gifts didn’t get opened like we normally did at midnight. “Morning, sleeping beauty.” Oliver greeted from the couch where he and Lacie were curled up together.

“It’s afternoon, babe.” Lacie corrected him.

“Can we finally open gifts now?” My dad asked. He flashed a wink at my mom. “I know my wife got me something really good, and I’ve been dying to open it.”

“Dad.” I groaned as I pressed my free hand to my face. Jesus, almost thirty years into their marriage, and they still acted like lovesick teenagers. And yes, it was amazing, and I was happy that my parents were still so in love, but I really wished they would keep their little comments to themselves.

Cole sat down beside the tree and pulled me down onto his lap. I winced when pain flared through hips and back. Colton’s eyes flashed with worry as he ran them over my face.
